Coal Made Into Oil?
Yes, you heard right this idea came along when the DARPA made a press statement on making coal economical and environmentally sound. This brought about a decent argument; considering the US use something like 250,000+ barrels of fuel on their own. Meaning they rely on their neighbours, surrounding countries and other foreign countries to suit their needs.
However the interesting part is the US has almost 300 billion coal reserves. Now if you could convert that to fuel, you would have enough to fuel the entire world; as well as cut out the neighboring countries.
The Fischer-Tropsch process used in the 1940s by Nazis who were known to create liquid fuel using the method. This does however indicate that it may not work all the economically. Times were desperate and oil had dried up in Nazi Germany; thus they were out of resources and used this as a last resort.
A Google chase for ‘liquid coal’ offers little comfort. Coming in at cardinal 3 is “Liquid Atramentous is a Bad Deal for Global Warming”, while at cardinal 6 is “Why Aqueous Atramentous Is Not a Viable Option to Move America Beyond Oil”.
The US Air Force itself wouldn’t hesitate to agree: on 5 August they arise to be on the border of abandoning their own attempts at converting oil to coal. Time will acquaint if DARPA succeeds in the area the US Air Force have previously not done well in.
